Welcome to the official Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) web site for the State Route (S.R.) 30 and S.R. 981 Improvement Project.

The purpose of the S.R. 30 and S.R. 981 Improvement Project is to address and improve both traffic congestion and safety in the vicinity of S.R. 30 and S.R. 981. The project area associated with the transportation improvements is entirely located within Unity Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

S.R. 30 is a highly traveled four lane roadway which provides east-west access between the City of Pittsburgh and the Laurel Highlands. Within the Unity Township project area, growth is rapidly occurring and traffic is expected to continue to increase adding to an already congested S.R. 30.

Based on funding availability, the S.R. 30 and S.R. 981 Improvement Project has been divided into three adjacent final design and construction sections. Section Q01 of S.R. 30 is the only project section currently funded for construction. The construction of Section Q01 of S.R. 30 is scheduled to begin in 2006. To meet this schedule, the final design and right-of-way acquisition phases for this section will be completed early 2006.

As additional funding becomes available, the two remaining sections will proceed to final design, right-of-way acquisition, and construction.

As a result, within Section Q01, PennDOT is currently proposing to: widen S.R. 30 and S.R. 981 at S.R. 30, construct median barriers or mountable curbs to divide traffic along S.R. 30, and channelize the S.R. 981 intersection to better direct traffic at that location. Other improvements include limiting left turns to signalized intersections, replacing the existing traffic signals with a coordinated traffic signal system, and adding a new center turn lane at Monastery Drive.

All of these design elements have been developed and proposed to achieve the project’s goals while minimizing impacts to adjacent properties and businesses. Some specific outcomes that will be observable as a result of the improvements include better mobility and safety, reduced traffic congestion, improved sight distances, and wider roadway typical sections.
