Section Limits
Section V10 of S.R. 981 begins on S.R. 981 at Arnold Palmer Drive and extends south approximately 5,400 feet (1 mile) to the Westmoreland County Airpark entrance.
Project Area
The Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, the worldwide headquarters of Kennametal, Inc., and a variety of businesses and residential properties are within the project area of Section V10.
Roadway Classification
S.R. 981 is classified as an urban arterial (major street/highway that moves traffic) from its intersection with S.R. 30 south to its intersection with S.R. 2027 (Charles Houck Road) and Gravel Hill Road. South of the S.R. 2027 (Charles Houck Road) and Gravel Hill Road intersection to the project limits at the Airpark entrance, S.R. 981 is classified as a rural collector.
Objectives and Improvements
The primary objectives for this section are reducing traffic congestion and improving sight distance, vertical and horizontal geometry, and operational conditions at the S.R. 981 intersection with S.R. 2027 (Charles Houck Road) and Gravel Hill Road.
To meet these objectives, the improvements proposed along this section consist of 1) reconstruction and widening of S.R. 981 to four lanes between Arnold Palmer Drive south to the S.R. 981 and S.R. 2027 (Charles Houck Road) intersection; 2) reconfiguration, realignment, and signalization of the S.R. 981, S.R. 2027 (Charles Houck Road), and Arnold Palmer Regional Airport entrance intersection; and 3) upgrades to the existing two lane S.R. 981 between the realigned intersection and the Airpark entrance. Other improvements resulting include better storm water drainage, signing and pavement markings, median barriers/mountable curbs, potential lighting, guide rail enhancements, and context sensitive design features.
